Club Buys Fishery

After many months of legal work, Swanton Morley Fishery is now owned by Dereham and District Angling Club.

The property had been rented from the previous owners for many years, but then they announced that they were selling and the Dereham club was given the chance to buy it.

Now, after around 18 months, the final papers have been signed and the angling club are the proud new owners. Special thanks went to the club's chairman, secretary and treasurer for their work on behalf of members.

Now starts the hard work. The "Monday Gang" spend the best part of the day keeping the site clear of rubbish that others have deposited.

Anglers are asked to take their rubbish away with them at the end of their sessions, giving the gang more time to spend on keeping the swims trimmed and the pathways in good shape.

Bigger jobs are left to the working parties, details of which can be found on the notice board at the lakes, or on the club website.

Age Doesn't Matter

April 2010, saw a season warm-up match take place at Hingham Fishmere and it was here that it was proven that experience can be the key to success.

Now in his 90s, John 'wimp' Weales is a well known and popular face amongst club members and it was great to see him showing the relative 'youngsters' how to do it, winning the match.

Carp Match & Social 14th-16th May 2010

Willow lake was again the venue for the club biannual carpy caper weekend. Money in the hat for peg, food and a small wager on biggest fish and biggest catch and the draw for swims took place at 5.30pm on the Friday evening.

A total of 10 places are alloted and for this weekend, a couple of late cancellations due to volcanic ash cloud activity left 7 anglers competing for the trophy and dubious title of DDAC 'Carp Master'.

Sadly the recent cold weather affected the carp's appetites and only two fish were caught - a 14lb 2oz mirror to L. Grove to scoop second place and a 14lb 5oz common to J. Mills to take the trophy. Another banter packed weekend and top nosh supplied and cooked by resident chef George and his able assistant Berney.

Title to be recontested later this season in September, get your name down if you want a place.

  • Increase In Fish Stock To Willow Lake

On Sunday 13th Febuary there was a stocking of carp in to Willow Lake. 21 fish from AJS Fisheries averaging 5lb were introduced to compliment the 30 fish of similar size introduced from the same source in November 2009.
These stockings were made possible thanks to a very generous donation from a long term club member who sadly passed away recently following a battle with cancer. It is hoped that these small carp will, if treated with care grow steadily to make Willow a superb water for the future.

Please will all members who fish Willow lake ensure that when caught none of these stock fish are to be retained in a keepnet or sack and that unhooking mats are used at all times. Please also be reminded that moving of any fish between waters at the fishery is absolutely not permitted.
